My first “musings” on my Wedding Day Make-up

lm-post-So my wedding day is fast approaching and I will be doing my own make-up for the big day! I also knew that I wanted to do my make-up for the wedding, after all don’t I know my face better than anyone? Haha Friends have told me that it may be less stressful to have someone else do my make-up that day but to me that is 1000x more stressful! What if it’s not what I want? What if they use products I’m not familiar with that melt off my face?? To me, doing my make-up IS relaxing. Whether I’m getting ready for work or getting ready for a night out I love doing my make-up, it’s almost like a zen moment in my day for me as crazy as that sounds. And that’s how I will feel on my wedding day too. So here’s what I’ve been thinking…

I want my make-up the day of to me light, yet defined, pretty, and sweat-proof (since I plan to dance my face off.. not my makeup haha). I’m currently deciding on 1 of 2 foundations to use, Estee Lauder Double Wear or my Urban Decay All-Nighter. Some of you are probably thinking, wait I thought you said light? Yes these are VERY full coverage foundations in my opinion but can be applied with a beauty blender to sheer them out while still providing an even base that will look great in photos. Both of these foundations keep my oil at bay and last for hours. We are doing a first look for the wedding which helps as my make-up will be more freshly appled, but I still want to look good in all the candids and snapchats what will surely take place at the reception 🙂 My ONLYYYY issue with the UD collection is that all the shades run a litttttle yellow on me so I would probably have to mix a few to get a perfect shade. So I would have to have it down to a science to recreate the perfect concoction the day of. Not a huge issue but something to consider.

Screen Shot 2017-07-05 at 5.24.47 PMFor blush I want something that truly gives just a beautiful flush to the cheeks that makes me look natural and glowy, as a bride should right? I have recently been intrigued by the Hourglass blushes as they definitely have a sheen to them from what I’ve seen and read. I haven’t tested them out myself yet but I definitely want to pick them up and get a good feel of them for the wedding day.

Lashes I am thinking that individual false lashes may be the way to go. My sister in law got married recently and I wore strip lashes. Let me just say as the maid of honor I bawled my eyes out during my speech and my strip lashes were pretty much done after that (I ripped them off and continued crying haha) With individual lashes I feel that even if 1 or 2 inevitably fall off I will still be okay.

Screen Shot 2017-07-05 at 5.19.03 PMAs for lips this might be the toughest one. Right now my favorite lip is my Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lip in #06 Pink Souffle. The entire Sephora Lip Stain collection is amazing. SOOOOO long-wearing and affordable (only $14.00 and they have tonsss of colors to choose from. I have several and they are all amazing) But Pink Souffle is just PERFECT.

Screen Shot 2017-07-05 at 5.22.01 PMMy other thought for lips is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lip in “Lovely”. A pretty nude-pink that gives enough color to the lips but not too much. Both these options would be amazing so I’m going to have a tough time deciding!

If anyone has suggestions or has used any of these products on their wedding day I would love to hear how they worked for you! Until then I will keep testing them out to make my final decision!!!

My Top 5 Foundations (so far)

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 9.09.53 PM

I’ve tried a lot of foundations. A lot. It’s one of my favorite beauty items to test out. Foundation is the base of your make-up so it is important that it isn’t sliding all over the place or caking up. If it is then it will be difficult to get a smooth blush, bronzer, highlighter, etc application. I’m going to tell you about 5 different foundations I LOVE and why I love them. They each have their own purpose and are the best I’ve found for my skin so far (but always looking for my new holy grail).

smashbox

First is the Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation ($42 at Sephora), I’ve written a post about this one already so I’ll link it here instead of repeating how much I love this stuff. But really, might be my fav everyday foundation.

The next foundation is one I used years ago and kind of got away from until recently. Not because it isn’t amazing but because, like I said, I love testing out new foundations. It is the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Long Wear Foundation.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.09.48 PM

This foundation has a beautiful satin finish. It comes in 40 shades which I think is an amazing range! It is $47.00 at Sephora. I wear shade 100 Ivorie Neutral (2nd from the lightest obvs haha). It definitely lasts all day long, it claims 24 hour wear but I don’t recommend wearing any foundation for 24 hours… and definitely don’t sleep in it! It is an oil-free formula with medium to full buildable coverage. If your skin leans oily I suggest wearing a mattifying primer (water-based as that is what the foundation is as well) underneath the foundation to make sure it doesn’t go anywhere since the foundation isn’t 100% matte. It has SPF 15 in it which is nice but be careful if you are wearing it for an event where there will be pictures taken as SPF can sometimes cause camera flashback. Great everyday foundation that never looks heavy or cakey!

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 8.17.16 PM

My 3rd go-to foundation is the Make-up Forever Mat Velvet+ foundation ($41.00 @ Sephora). This foundation was my NUMBER ONE RIDE OR DIE full coverage, matte foundation for YEARS. I’d wear it every time I went out at night or any time I wanted extra coverage. This foundation is water-proof, non-comedogenic, oil-free, doesn’t oxidizes, and comes in 21 shades (I like shade 20 the best). This foundation give the most beautiful finish to the skin, the most beautiful of any other foundation of equal coverage. It is a contender to be the foundation I wear on my wedding day, so that is saying something. It’s packaged in a squeeze tube and a little goes a LONG way. Favorite way to apply: damp beauty blender (as with all of these foundations I’m listing).

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 8.24.40 PMNext is a more affordable but AMAZING foundation. It is the Soap and Glory One Heck of a Blot Foundation, $19.00 at Ulta (Target just started carrying Soap and Glory as well YAY!). This foundation is full coverage, matte (they refer to it as 12-Hour Shine Block Technology), and gives such an even coverage to my face. So much so that it can look a little flat if you don’t add some dimension back in with your contour and highlighter but I always do that anyway so this is not an issue for me. The shade range is not as wide (only 4 shades) so I actually mix the lightest 2 shades to get my perfect match. One downside, it can get cakey if you apply too much. I recommend applying a small amount with a beauty blender. Also if you like to bring your under eye concealer down in a triangle shape I recommend not putting the foundation in that area as that will just add another area and look cakey. This foundation requires a few test runs to see how it will work for you but is definitely worth is when you figure it out. I pair it with my holy grail face powder from this line (Soap and Glory One Heck of a Blot Powder) and I almost never need to touch up!

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 11.40.42 AM.pngOkay, I think I’ve saved my favorite for last. It’s a toss up but I think I can comfortably say this is my favorite foundation at the time being. It is the Urban Decay All-Nighter Liquid Foundation ($40 @ Sephora). It comes in 24 shades, I have shade 2.0 and shade 0.5 (the lightest shade). This stuff is amazingggggg. Full coverage, keeps you matte, and doesn’t break me out. I’m also obsessed with the packaging haha. One downside is that it can oxidize so I recommend buying a shade a touch lighter (if you have oily skin that foundation usually oxides on) than you would normally buy so that when it oxides it will be the correct color and not too dark. I remedy this by mixing 0.5 and 2.0 to create a lighter shade. Sephora recommends applying with a brush but I love the finish that the damp beauty blender gives. A brush might give you a littleeeee more coverage though as it will not absorb product like a beauty blender will. This is another wedding day foundation contender of mine. Absolutely stunning and something I have repurchased multiple times.

Here are the swatches on my arm of the foundations and shades I mentioned!!

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 8.53.28 PMHope you liked this foundation post of my favs!!! Again I am always tested new ones so I will be sure to keep you posted on any other foundation I fall in love with!

Ulta Haul!

IMG_2780Hi!!! So right now Ulta is having AMAZING sales as part of their 21 Days of Beauty (March 19th-April 8th). They have a different item featured everyday and they also have sales that last through out the month! I stopped in to pick up some of my “can’t live without” products at a discounted price as well as some new items to test out!

First up I have been wanting to try the Butter Bronzer from Physicians Formula. This is not a new product but EVERYYYY beauty lover has been raving about it on YouTube and Instagram for a while so I figured I would pick it up and see what the fuss was about! I love Physicians Formula as their products as generally very good for sensitive skin like mine and also non-comedogenic. The bronzer is $14.99 at Ulta and comes in a “light” shade as well as a regular bronzer shade. I am pretty fair and got the regular shade (which is still pretty light).

IMG_2783

I can see why everyone has been talking about it. It truly is “buttery” and blends very easily. There is not shimmer in it (maybe a little bit of a glowy sheen if anything) and it definitely adds a beautiful warmth to the skin. I may even use this all over my face when I start getting a bit of a tan on my body so that my face isn’t lighter than the rest of me.

The packaging is cute, it comes with a mirror and a separate compartment for the little applicator it comes with as well. I say applicator because it is not a brush which is a bit odd to me. It’s more of a foam sponge? The Ulta website says that this is because the bronzer is a mix of a powder and a cream. I probably won’t use it as I prefer to use a big fluffy powder brush for even bronzer application as I did today and it worked great.

img_2784.jpg

It really is a great product my ONLYYY complaint is the scent. Usually scents do not bother me but this smells like straight coconut lotion. It is most potent when you first apply but as you’re wearing it it subsides. If you are sensitive to fragrances you might want to think about that before purchasing.

Next up I purchased the NYX Lid Lingerie palette because these colors speak to my soul. I LOVE eye looks where warm tones are used along side cool tones and thats what this palette made me think of. I have a NYX Lingerie liquid lip that I enjoy so I figured I would try another item from the Lingerie Line. This palette is $9.99 at Ulta which I think is a great price AND they are buy one get one 50% off if you would like a second (there are other eye palettes in the Lingerie collection as well). There are 6 neutral shades, all matte.

FullSizeRender

Above are the swatches on my arm and I was pleasantly surprised at the pigmentation for a drug store palette! I tried it on my eyes this morning without a primer and I will say they do blend well without any fallout! I want to try them using an eye primer like my Urban Decay Primer potion to see if that “up’s” the pigmentation at all. Another tip is to spray your eye shadow brush with a facial setting spray before applying eye shadow as that will make the shadows more pigmented as well. Great palette for the price in my opinion!

Next I purchased the NYX cosmetics Wonder Stick, $11.99. It is a double ended stick, one side is cream contour and the other is cream highlight. Mine is in the shade Light. I bought this because I was looking for a cream contour to use underneath a powder contour for an all day face slayyyy.

Screen Shot 2017-03-21 at 12.15.18 PM

I like that the contour shade is a but ashy so it will mimic a shadow well, which is the aim of contour – to create dimension and shadows in the face for a slimmer and more defined appearance. I don’t really think I will use the highlighting shade because generally I will use a lighter concealer for under the eyes, down my nose, forehead etc to bring light to the center of the face. But it is still a nice creamy consistency for anyone who wants to use that end.

IMG_2785

My only issue was that when I got home I noticed the first ingredient of this product is Mineral Oil, NOOOOOOOOO!!!! Mineral Oil is highly comedogenic (will cause clogged pores). Mineral Oil is basically a swear word to me. I will try this product out as I’m using in on such a small area of my face as opposed to a foundation with mineral oil. However if this breaks me out it’s probably going back or going to one of my girlfriends to try.

I also had 2 impulse buys (which is like guaranteed to happen to me at any beauty store). The first is the St. Tropez tanning mitt! I have always used this mitt to apply self tanner as it is inexpensive and holds up well even after washing. It is $6.50 at Ulta. I used to use the St. Tropez tanning mousse and I do like it but I have since switched to the Loving Tan mousse as it is superrrrrr dark, non-streaky, long-lasting and paraben free!! The St. Tropez mousse can lean a littttttle too orange on my skin tone.

The second item was the Ulta sharpener, $2.50 and buy 2 get 2 free! I didn’t take advantage of that deal because that’s a lot of sharpeners to have haha but nice of them to offer! I already have a ton of sharpeners but I got this one because it looked like it had a large enough sharpener for my Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($27 at Ulta, steep but they are great).

Screen Shot 2017-03-21 at 11.41.52 AM

I used to use these pencils ALLLL the time but NO sharpener fits them so once they would get dull I would get annoyed with them and stop using them. I don’t know why Nars makes such a different shaped pencil (Actually I do, probably so you buy the Nars sharpener!!) but it’s great to know the Ulta one works perfectly! Especially since Ulta recently started selling Nars products!!

One thing I was hoping to get while at Ulta was my holy grail face powder, the Soap and Glory One Heck of a Blot powder. I LOVEEEEEE this powder! Keeps me matte all day, doesn’t break me out, and doesn’t cake up upon reapplying! I’ve hit pan on mine and I currently do not have a back up so that’s basically equivalent to a 5 alarm fire for me haha

NOT OKAY TO BE THIS LOW ON PRODUCT!!! MAYDAY, MAYDAY!

Ulta is currently having buy one get one 40% off of Soap and Glory products however my Ulta was sold out of this powder! Luckily the promotion is running online as well so I will probably pick some up on there!

Hope you enjoyed this Ulta haul and will check out some of the great deals they are having!! Let me know what you want to pick up from your next Ulta visit!

Kristen

Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation Review

smashbox

Hi Everyone!!

Today I want to talk about a foundation that’s quickly become one of my favs in my rotation, the Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation.. phew that’s a mouthful.

This foundation is marketed to appear the same on the skin in all lighting (natural daylight, horrible office lights, etc.) That claim drew me in because we all have that one full coverage foundation that looks great when we apply it indoors and then we see it in our rear view mirror of our car and it is cake-town. My favorite way to apply this is with a damp beauty blender for a flawless finish!

Smashbox claims this is a medium-full buildable foundation which I agree with. I wear it to work most days and it is the perfect amount of coverage. I also love that I can blot my skin with this foundation and the foundation doesn’t budge. WIN! It keeps oil at bay for a few hours though, but like I said even after touching up it looks good.

This foundation is oil free which is something I always look for as I am prone to break outs. It is also water based which is interesting. Many of Smashbox’s primers that they are famous for are silicone based, therefore I don’t recommend wearing them under this foundation. Stick with a water-based primer such as Rimmel’s Stay Matte Primer (and it’s under $6.00, can’t beat that)!
